5 EPISODES

EP. 1: Sick Smell of Success – Impromptu Images

In this first episode of our five-part miniseries we take you to vintage poster movie gallery space Sick Smell of Success on Oudezijds Achterburgwal, at the heart of the Red Light District. Archivist and film buff Michael Helmerhorst tells the story of the space; violinist Lucas Bernardo da Silva starts the musical journey with a Fantasia by Telemann.

EP. 2: Capsicum Fabric Store – Blending Colours

In this second episode we will visit Capsicum Natural Fabrics store on the Oude Hoogstraat; since 1975, Capsicum sells handmade fabrics for curtains and upholstery. At the heart of the store lies respect for handicraft and product originality. Most of their products come from India. Cellist, singer and composer Chieko Donker Duyvis performs one of her own compositions and tells about her special relationship with this colorful place.

EP. 3: Prostitution Information Center – A Safe Haven

In the third episode of our miniseries we visit the PIC: the Prostitution Information Center. The PIC provides information about sex work from the perspective of sex workers to anyone who is interested. Sex workers, clients, students, journalists and tourists from all over the world can visit this unique and friendly place where everyone can come in to ask questions, to look around, read books or simply enjoy a cup of coffee.

EP. 4: House with the Tulip – In this old house…

In episode 4 we meet artist Katrien Vogel on the Oudezijds Voorburgwal. In the making of her sculptures the past and its traditions, her ongoing life and surroundings all play a role. The work has little connection with the speed of our digital world and leans rather towards a place of slowness. This is the origin of the ‘Garlands’, Growthobjects and Conversation Pieces. She tells the story of her work, the house and her connection to the neighborhood.

EP. 5 (finale): The Walloon Church – Coming Together

In the fifth and last episode of our miniseries the quartet gathers in the Walloon Church. The Walloon Church lies beautifully hidden at the Walenpleintje and is a former Roman Catholic chapel of the Sint Paulusbroeders-monastery. The first chapel of the monastery was built in 1409. Every Sunday at 11:00 a French spoken service is held at the church. Former sexton Nienke Meuleman tells about her connection to the church, the neighborhood and the music. For the latter, the members of the Alegria String Quartet, which you have gotten to know in the past four videos, get together to perform a beautiful piece by Russian composer Aleksandr Borodin.

About the project

InsideOut: Red Light, Connected. Digital walking concerts in the Red Light District. 5 videos, 5 locations, 5 local residents, 4 musicians! Meet the neighborhood and its residents.
This digital project consists of a five-part video series that takes viewers along various special locations in the Red Light District and connects them to classical music.

After the release of the fifth video, there was an opportunity for the audience and the musicians to meet each other live at a special location in Amsterdam to talk about the videos and get to know each other (better). This occurred on July 12, 2021.

For more information about this event, please keep an eye on our social media! During this event all Covid-precautions will be taken into account.

Due to the ongoing corona measures, we had to cancel the live walking concerts. Red Light Arts and Culture has therefore decided to adapt the medium of the Walking Concerts in the Red Light District and to transform it into a new, digital form!

This video series was generously supported by the Amsterdam Fund for the Arts [AFK] and by an Alumni Enterprise Award from the Music Academy of the West.

This video project was created and recorded following all the safety and health measures, rules and guidelines as per the Covid-19 pandemic.
